Waiting for the summer

Chania, Heraklion, Rethymno, TipsMarch 2, 2018Isidoros

This is probably the last article of the winter look of Crete, since the spring-summer season has just started, though temperature feeling is still a bit chilly!!

All the high mountains of the island are still covered with snow, offering great views for the traveler, especially when the open sea joins the scenery, like next to the National road from Rethimno to Hania.

The hiding game of sun with clouds offered these 2 photos with just ten minutes time gap!

Speaking about the sea, you can still enjoy the quitepeace of the summer-busy touristic spots before they get noisy by the thousands of every day visitors, like the beautiful, long sandy beach of Kalamaki, close to the famous Matala village in south Heraklion.

Driving around the mainland of central Crete (Heraklion and Rethimno regions), you have the chance to enjoy the beautiful mountain picks of Idi (Psiloritis) from different sides.

Gastronomical surprises are waiting in some special taverns and coffee shops (the ones I call <magic kafenio>), as the healthy winter greens are still available (like fresh artichoke in 260 degrees coffee shop in Moires (south Heraklion) where Vasilis is happy to show you the way Cretans use to pill it and enjoy it with … what else, good raki!

In our case, the salt and lemon used for artichoke makes raki looks like white tequila, thanks to Vasilis’ fantasy!!

In another special place in the village of Pirgos, Stella and Manolis are lucky to cook fresh greens, herbs and vegetables which they grow by themselves, using combined methods of old traditions and modern practices of organic, biodynamic techniques.

The only thing they should be aware of is to remove the hungry snails before they cook the greens with the traditional way (no water, just a bit of olive oil in the pot and continuously mixing), and with salt from the south coast (Libyan Sea), they are open to share the joy of an amazing meal.

So, until next time I’ll try to reveal some of the winter treasures of Crete, I should not forget to add a few photos from the White Mountains in Hania region-also impressive, taken from the national road…

… and I would like to mention that there are a few spots (basically in Rethimno region) offering great view of both of the 2 highest mountain ranges of Crete at the same time, as you can see at the following photos.
